Q & A

Name a Horror character you relate to on a spiritual/personal level?

Jack Torrance probably – writer’s block is a pain.

You’ve gotta go through some bad ideas to get to the good ones. Tell us one of your bad ideas. How do you get past the bad ones to find your spark?

I made some properly awful films growing up. Thankfully they will never see the light of day! It’s always exciting when you can feel yourself improving, so you just have to keep making them I suppose.

Do you consider yourself part of a horror community?

I hope so! There is definitely a community of female horror filmmakers in Australia, where I live.

When you’re building the world of your film, where do you look for inspiration?

Places I’ve been to in real life, various art in different mediums, dreams, etc, anything really.

What would you do if you woke up inside of your film?

Hijack a boat and gtfo.

Who would be on your ultimate horror villain squad?

Just all the ghosts of wronged women in Asian horror films. What a girl gang.

Lightning round: Freddy or Jason? Stephen King or H.P. Lovecraft? Practical or CGI? Post Apocalypse or Pre Apocalypse?

Freddy. Stephen King. Practical. Post Apocalypse.

What scares you, and does it inspire your storytelling?

Magpies, loved ones dying, and motherhood. Definitely - my approach to screenwriting is basically just making horror films out of my personal fears.

And finally, Ghostface would like to know ‘What’s your favourite scary movie?’

The Shining maybe? I watched it pretty young, so I feel like the trauma was magnified.
