Q&A with Dean C. Marcial and Brett Potter, Directors of “Sea Devil”
ALTER: Name a Horror character you relate to on a spiritual level? Who is your Horror spirit animal?
DEAN C. MARCIAL & BRETT POTTER: Dick Hallorann in The Shining — we feel very connected to Scatman Crothers.
A: Do you consider yourself part of a horror community?
DM&BP: Yes–we love horror meme groups and are always reading creepypastas. Additionally, we work with a film collective in Miami called Borscht that has other amazing horror filmmakers like the Meza Brothers.
A: When you’re building the world of your film, where do you look for inspiration?
DM&BP: The real world — horror films are reflections of our tangible, human anxieties. The best horror movies are dramas with a supernatural elements dropped in.
A: Who would be on your ultimate horror villain squad?
DM&BP: Wallace Shawn in Southland Tales , the slimy squid creature in Possession , and the grandmother from Hereditary. And maybe the cop from Thunder Road.
A: Lightning round: Freddy or Jason? Stephen King or H.P. Lovecraft? Practical or CGI?
A: How do you go about creating the props and sets for your film? How do you create objects that are relatable but unfamiliar?
DM&BP: Look to nature and think of the uncanny — unsettling images are longer lasting than cheap gore.
A: And finally, Ghostface would like to know ‘What’s your favourite scary movie?’
DM&BP: We love all of Koji Shiraishi’s found footage movies — Noroi, Occult and especially Shirome!
