Q&A with the filmmakers behind “Box Room”
Name a Horror character you relate to on a spiritual level? Who is your Horror spirit animal?
Pinhead – Hellraiser. Sometimes I feel like I’m from another dimension like this dude. I don’t even think he’s that evil, after all it seems like he’s been chosen as some type of ambassador for his realm. Just instead of tea and handshakes, there’s shanks and skin-flaying.
You’ve gotta go through some bad ideas to get to the good ones. Tell us one of your bad ideas. How do you get past the bad ones to find your spark?
Most of my ideas are bad. For the most part, those ideas don’t stay with me long. They hang around for a few minutes like wet toilet paper on the bottom your shoes. But the good ones, they stay with me. Eventually you get to a point where you either address the good idea by writing a script, storyboarding or just jumping into production OR you consciously throw a good idea into the wet toilet paper pile. Which sucks.
Do you consider yourself part of a horror community?
I suppose, but only in that I really enjoy watching and making horror films. Why? Is there some club that I haven’t been invited to? I bet there is.
When you’re building the world of your film, where do you look for inspiration?
I look to the best there is. Who builds worlds better than anyone else? What can I learn from them? Where can I find out more about their process and methodology? Youtube is an awesome resource for ‘making of’ documentaries. The Abyss’ is one of my faves.
What would you do if you woke up inside of your film?
I’d probably take some ambien and go back to sleep. If I couldn’t get to sleep I’d look for the weird baby alien and try to teach it some dance moves. YouTube gold.
Who would be on your ultimate horror villain squad?
The Alien from Alien, Zombies (Romero), the Thing from The Thing, Candyman, Jason Voorhees, Pinhead, Dr Heiter (some craic he’d be)
Lightning round: Freddy or Jason? Stephen King or H.P. Lovecraft? Practical or CGI? Post Apocalypse or Pre Apocalypse?
Jason. King. Practical. Post Apocalypse.
And finally, Ghostface would like to know ‘What’s your favourite scary movie?’
If I had to pick just one, I’d go with Alien. No other film has inspired and terrified me so much.
