Q&A with Hyun Lee, Director of “Asian Girls”
Name a Horror character you relate to on a spiritual level? Who is your Horror spirit animal?
I’d be the forgettable character who makes a bad decision and dies first.
You’ve gotta go through some bad ideas to get to the good ones. Tell us one of your bad ideas. How do you get past the bad ones to find your spark?
I don’t go through ideas so quickly, I had one idea and I’m still working on that one.
Do you consider yourself part of a horror community?
Not really, I don’t watch a lot of horror films cause I’m a wuss.
When you’re building the world of your film, where do you look for inspiration?
Real life because the real world is really scary.
What would you do if you woke up inside of your film?
Go to sleep and have sleep paralysis.
Who would be on your ultimate horror villain squad?
Sadako, Kayako and all the other angry Asian ghost girls.
Lightning round: Freddy or Jason? Stephen King or H.P. Lovecraft? Practical or CGI? Post Apocalypse or Pre Apocalypse?
Who? Neither! Both! Anthropocene!
How do you go about creating the props and sets for your film? How do you create objects that are relatable but unfamiliar?
I like the idea of using everyday objects in ways that they shouldn’t be used. The more ordinary it is, the better. It’s much more messed up when a mundane object is used to kill someone rather than a typical weapon like a gun.
And finally, Ghostface would like to know ‘What’s your favourite scary movie?’
I just watched Midsommar and I loved it.
