Q&A with Kayden Phoenix, Director of “Penance”
Name a Horror character you relate to on a spiritual/personal level?
Hannibal. Because he never saw himself as the villain.
You’ve gotta go through some bad ideas to get to the good ones. Tell us one of your bad ideas. How do you get past the bad ones to find your spark?
Starting out ALL I HAD were bad ideas! Lol. But I shot them and learned how to direct, how to write, how to produce, how to let prop dept put away props (because I tried to help and broke a wall clock)…. You don’t go past, you go through.
Do you consider yourself part of a horror community?
Not at all. I don’t get freaked out- I rather enjoy horror, if it’s done correctly.
When you’re building the world of your film, where do you look for inspiration?
I look at the real world- there’s so many horrors in reality and it’s sad. So I twist the reality and show the truth in a digestible horror form.
What would you do if you woke up inside of your film?
Oh, I’d totally join the kids- they’re def my types. Lol.
Who would be on your ultimate horror villain squad?
A horror villain squad- alright. Millennials! We have nothing, so we have nothing to lose.
Lightning round: Freddy or Jason? Stephen King or H.P. Lovecraft? Practical or CGI? Post Apocalypse or Pre Apocalypse?
Pass…Stephen King ALWAYS!.. Depends on budget (Producer answer, lol)… Pre-Apocalypse means now? Def Pre-Apoc
How do you go about creating the props and sets for your film? How do you create objects that are relatable but unfamiliar?
I have a great team honestly. My makeup artist made 3 tongues- they’re texture, so great!
And finally, Ghostface would like to know ‘What’s your favourite scary movie?’
I don’t find movies scary. Twisted, dark- yes. But not scary. I’d say Requiem for a Dream because though it has amazing shots, great storylines, memorable acting, etc- I CANNOT watch it (again).
