Q&A with Matt McGregor, Director of IN THE BASEMENT
Name a Horror character you relate to on a spiritual/personal level?
Bruce the shark from Jaws, mainly because I’m hungry all the time. I’m right there with ya, Bruce!
You’ve gotta go through some bad ideas to get to the good ones. Tell us one of your bad ideas. How do you get past the bad ones to find your spark?
I have a lot of bad ideas, almost every idea I have is a bad idea actually. It’s figuring out what the one good idea mixed in the with the bad ideas is and focus on that. If an idea sounds like something you’d actually want to see, then it’s got to be a good idea. I try to imagine myself going through movies that are streaming on TV and thinking to myself, “do I want to watch this?” and if I do then I make that film.
Do you consider yourself part of a horror community?
I do! But I want my community to grow!
When you’re building the world of your film, where do you look for inspiration?
The news. The world is a messed up place so there is a ton of inspiration out there.
What would you do if you woke up inside of your film?
Who would be on your ultimate horror villain squad?
The xenomorph aliens and the predator.
Lightning round: Freddy or Jason? Stephen King or H.P. Lovecraft? Practical or CGI? Post Apocalypse or Pre Apocalypse?
Freddy, King, Practical, Post-Apocalypse.
What scares you, and does it inspire your storytelling?
People and the atrocities they have committed scare me. Mankind was and still is capable of being the most horrifying monster of all.
And finally, Ghostface would like to know ‘What’s your favourite scary movie?’
Poltergeist or The Shining.
