Q&A with Blake Mawson, Director of “PYOTR495”
Name a Horror character you relate to on a spiritual/personal level?
I feel like personally I’m Tatum Riley from Scream or Trash from Return Of The Living Dead, whereas professionally, I’m more Nina Sayers from Black Swan.
You’ve gotta go through some bad ideas to get to the good ones. Tell us one of your bad ideas. How do you get past the bad ones to find your spark?
I tend to try and bury my worst ideas.
Do you consider yourself part of a horror community?
Absolutely. The horror community is one of the most invested, engaging and loyal audiences there is! I love connecting to others within the genre.
When you’re building the world of your film, where do you look for inspiration?
It can come from anywhere. Often when I’m on the train or bus an idea will come to me. Many of the things happening in our world today, how they affect us, conversations I overhear in a shop or in passing, something someone says to me. All sorts of things inspire me.
What would you do if you woke up inside of your film?
Hop on my scooter and go home.
Who would be on your ultimate horror villain squad?
Mystery Man, Freddy, The Crypt Keeper, Vincent Price and Elvira (Does she count as a villainess?) snacking on The Stuff while riding around in Christine.
Lightning round: Freddy or Jason? Stephen King or H.P. Lovecraft? Practical or CGI? Post Apocalypse or Pre Apocalypse?
Freddy – Stephen King – Practical – Post Apocalypse
How do you go about creating the props and sets for your film? How do you create objects that are relatable but unfamiliar?
I’ve been very lucky to work with some great production design artists who I really clicked with and were able to bring-to-life some of the things I dreamed up in my head. I love bursts of the fantastical and surreal within reality, and always try and bring that into what I’m making.
What scares you, and does it inspire your storytelling?
The state of the world today terrifies me. The hatred and discrimination which acts as a disease within our humanity. And yes!
And finally, Ghostface would like to know ‘What’s your favourite scary movie?’
The Trump inauguration video.
