Q&A with Mateo Marquez, Director of “The Quiet”
Name a Horror character you relate to on a spiritual/personal level?
Jack Torrence & Dani from Midsommar
You’ve gotta go through some bad ideas to get to the good ones. Tell us one of your bad ideas. How do you get past the bad ones to find your spark?
Oh dear there are too many to tell! I usually get past them by communicating and collaborating with my team and the actors. Usually someone has a better idea and then we can all explore it together.
Do you consider yourself part of a horror community?
Yes, but there is always more to learn and understand.
When you’re building the world of your film, where do you look for inspiration?
I look towards what I am feeling, usually what causes me pain or anxiety. I believe that’s usually a great place to find something truly horrific.
What would you do if you woke up inside of your film?
In the case of the The Quiet I think we all have been waking up inside the film lol
What scares you, and does it inspire your storytelling?
The things I cannot explain in life such as violence and emotional trauma. Those two core elements are the bedrock to a lot of the stories I yearn to explore and tell.
And finally, Ghostface would like to know ‘What’s your favourite scary movie?’
I recently saw Del Toro’s “The Devil’s Backbone” and really loved the fusion of horror and drama to tell an intimate story. I think my own horror storytelling lends to this style. So this and Kubrick’s “The Shining” rank as my top two favorite horror films.
