Q & A

Name a Horror character you relate to on a spiritual level? Who is your Horror spirit animal?

Terry from The Gate. The kid is cool. He’s way into metal and horror and doesn't back down from a challenge, like defeating demons and closing the gate to hell in his friends back yard.

You’ve gotta go through some bad ideas to get to the good ones. Tell us one of your bad ideas. How do you get past the bad ones to find your spark?

If I have some ideas I just keep pitching them to people and the ones that suck usually let themselves be known pretty quick if I don't want to talk about them anymore. Or if the movie has been shot and I want to try things in post I’ll just test them out. For example in Death Metal, we tested having the axe have a voice of Lars’ great grandpa who was in hell because of him selling his soul for the guitar. It was dumb.

Do you consider yourself part of a horror community?

I do. I think mostly because of traveling around to horror film festivals with the short films. I get to meet a lot of awesome like-minded people and we’ll hopefully stay in touch and keep on seeing everyone at film festivals as life goes on. The horror community has the best people around. I love it.

When you’re building the world of your film, where do you look for inspiration?

I watch a lot of movies. Depending on which step of the process Im in is what I pay attention to. If Im writing Ill pay attention to the script, if I'm working with the effects team in pre-pro Ill pay attention to the effects, if Im about to storyboard Ill pay attention to the shots. And its usually movies Ive seen before and pick to rewatch for one reason or another.

What would you do if you woke up inside of your film?

If that happened I know I wouldn't have much time before I died a gruesome death. So I would probably do something where I could enjoy the last few minutes I have left. Probably go to the Alamo Drafthouse and eat some chips and queso and watch a horror movie.

Who would be on your ultimate horror villain squad?

Freddy, Tarman, Jack Torrance, David, Stripe, Sam, Tall Man, Toby, Pennywise, Pinhead, a couple Critters and an Alien

Lightning round: Freddy or Jason? Stephen King or H.P. Lovecraft? Practical or CGI? Post Apocalypse or Pre Apocalypse?

Freddy, Stephen King, Practical, Pre Apocalypse

And finally, Ghostface would like to know ‘What’s your favourite scary movie?’
