Gabriel Popoff

Gabriel was borned in Nîmes and grew up in the south of France. After many years studying communication and graphic design, he finishes studies with a double Film Master. Working now as an in-house videographer in fashion luxury brand : Balmain, he keeps up writing for film besides work.
Creativity has been part of his life since he’s a kid. “Growing up during my generation (late 90’s) has been amazing. We were getting access to creativity more and more thanks to the internet. I used to deeply immerse myself in video games for days, it’s been amazing experiences which helped a lot in art and storytelling.” From painting to making comics and films. He has been in love with creating stories for years without even realizing it. His curiosity for strangeness and the unknown has led him to write about crazy stories. Always using his graphic skills to build up a rich visual world. Fantastic and video are the perfect mix when it comes to creating stories because it unleashed every possibility.

Name a Horror character you relate to on a spiritual/personal level

You’ve gotta go through some bad ideas to get to the good ones. Tell us one of your bad ideas. How do you get past the bad ones to find your spark?

In the beginning of writing, the kid was supposed to fell of the stairs and die at the end. We finally choose to kill of the wife instead. We decided that she would become “the masterpiece” of the artist (Louise) in the end.

Do you consider yourself part of a horror community?

Yes of course ! We are always very curious to share with each other the weirdest movies. But in the end we have a lot of similar references.

When you’re building the world of your film, where do you look for inspiration?

We thought about a lot of movies that we loved. We try to end up on the other side of the internet with weird blogs or people talking about their experiences with the paranormal. Also we gather a lot of pictures that match the mood of the film.

What would you do if you woke up inside of your film?

I would probably ask them to dress better. And would cut off the kid bowl cut.

Who would be on your ultimate horror villain squad?

Howard in 10 Cloverfield Lane.

How do you go about creating the props and sets for your film? How do you create objects that are relatable but unfamiliar?

We basically create everything depending on similar references we have and ideas. We love to build moodboards that can give you a glimpse of the film in 3 seconds.

What scares you, and does it inspire your storytelling?

Madness, losing control of yourself, animal instinct, things you can’t see or feel. Yes, we tried to put forward our biggest fears to spread
