Q & A

Name a Sci-Fi or Horror character you relate to on a spiritual/personal level?

I always feel like I'm on the edge of snapping, despite having a wonderful wife and kids. During work especially -- so I'd definitely say Jack Torrance. Wow. I just wrote that. Never-mind.

Do you consider yourself part of the sci-fi or horror community?

Not currently. I just binge watch Red Letter media and horror movies after my kids go to bed.

When you’re creating the props and sets that make a new world, where do you look for inspiration? How do you create objects that are relatable but unfamiliar?

I just study films that smell like my childhood. Movies like The Shining and Texas Chainsaw Massacre have a "smell" -- old carpet, dusty cabinets, sweaty tank tops, stale food, crunchy hard-wood floors in a Babtist church. These kinds of grimy movies resonate with me strongly -- plus I know that Goodwill will have just about everything I'll need for the set and it will only cost $50.

You’ve gotta go through some bad ideas to get to the good ones. Tell us one of your bad ideas. How do you get past the bad ones to find your spark?

I spent around $50,000 creating a horror game about the Garden of Eden. It looked good on paper, but I had to start the plot over. I think most bad ideas can be recrafted into good ones with just a few tweaks. The best solution to study games and films and replicate the hooks and plot-lines that really catch your attention.

If the world you created in your film became a reality, is that a world you would want to live in? What would you do if you woke up inside of your film?

I think this world is, in some part, in the minds of 1/100 adults in the USA. Sadly, I've heard too many stories about the pain of OCD. From what I can gather, the best thing to do is to find help fast!

Who would be in your ultimate sci-fi or horror villain squad?

I make video games, so I immediately thought of this as a video game. Jack Torrance and the twins chase you through a maze, of course. He's got a throwing axe in his right hand, and a typewriter melee weapon in his left. His wife, Wendy, on the other hand, and Danny, have to escape the maze before the blizzard.

Lightning round: Freddy or Jason? Stephen King or H.P. Lovecraft? Practical or CGI? Post Apocalypse or Pre Apocalypse?

Michael Myers? Stephen King. Practical. Post Apocalypse!

And finally, Ghostface would like to know ‘What’s your favourite scary movie?’

Hereditary
